📚 Project Spotlight: Border Regional Library – Virden Branch Renovation
🛠️ A Community-Centered Renovation
Planning for the renovation began in 2022, and the project is now nearing completion. The Brandon Area Community Foundation was proud to support this important initiative with a $50,000 grant in 2024. The renovation is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
Border Regional Library serves the communities of Virden, Elkhorn, McAuley, and surrounding areas—home to approximately 6,000 residents. In a typical year, the Virden branch welcomes over 17,000 visitors and circulates more than 30,000 physical and digital resources.
🏛️ Upgrades That Matter
According to Head Librarian Laranda Bailey, the renovation addresses long-overdue maintenance and introduces several key improvements:
- A larger, more accessible front entrance
- Ramps and an accessible washroom
- Upgraded windows for a brighter environment
- New flooring, improved electrical and ventilation systems
- Energy-efficient LED lighting
- Enhanced insulation and fire safety features
🧩 A New Multipurpose Space
A highlight of the renovation is a new multipurpose room designed to increase community access. This space includes:
- A kitchenette with sink, dishwasher, and full-sized fridge
- A large smart TV for presentations, movie nights, or gaming
- Seating for up to 30 people
- A separate entrance and washroom access, allowing use outside of library hours
“This space will primarily support library programs and will also be available for community organizations and private rentals,” said Bailey. “It’s a major step forward in making the library a true community hub.”
